Sutro Baths
This collection of expressive nocturnal color photographs was created at the Sutro Bath Ruins in San Francisco during field trips with my photography classes, captured in stolen moments when I could step away from teaching.
I like to think the strength of these images lies in their color, atmosphere, fog, and the passage of time made visible through ocean wave movement in extended exposures. I’ve rendered color mostly true to the light sources, allowing natural and artificial light sources to reveal their true chromatic character. The frequent Pacific fog adds mystery and depth, transforming the concrete ruins into something ethereal.
The compositions are mostly formal, using the geometric structure of the ruins as frameworks for the fluid elements of water, fog, and light. I am interested in the atmospheric drama of this location, creating a compelling dialogue between this historic location and the relentless rhythm of the Pacific.
